A woman has died in a suspected diving incident at a popular Sydney beach.

Police were called to Shelly Beach in Manly about 10am on Friday, when the woman, 63, was found unresponsive in the water.

Police said she was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics but died at the scene.

Just after midday, police packed up the crime scene that covered a small part of the beach and the busy adjacent walkway. Officers had bagged evidence, including what appeared to be a snorkel, as beachgoers looked on.

The beach remained open on Friday afternoon, with hundreds of swimmers, sunbathers and divers seemingly unaware of the tragedy.

Several companies deliver scuba diving training courses at the beach, which is also a popular snorkelling spot.

Police said inquiries were ongoing, and a report was being prepared for the coroner.

In January, a 32-year-old South Korean woman believed to have been visiting Sydney on her honeymoon drowned at the beach.
