Man dead after two-car crash on northern beaches
By Angus Thomson and Riley Walter
A man is dead after his vehicle crossed three lanes of traffic and a median strip before colliding with another car on a busy intersection of Pittwater Road on Sydney’s northern beaches.
The man in his 80s was trapped inside his overturned vehicle following the crash at Mona Vale about 2.15pm on Wednesday. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, he was unable to be revived.
Four ambulances and a rescue helicopter attended the scene at the intersection of Pittwater Road and Vineyard Street. The driver of the other car was taken to hospital for assessment.
Witnesses told the Herald the 80-year-old’s car came out of the Mona Vale Bowling Club, crossed traffic and drove over a median strip, before it was T-boned by an SUV travelling northbound along Pittwater Road.
It then rolled and landed on a plot of land next to Mona Vale police station.
“It was pretty horrific,” said Hornsby resident Josie Blake, who arrived at the scene immediately after the crash with about 30 other bystanders.
Some witnesses believed the man may have suffered a medical episode.
Images posted on social media show bystanders and police attending to the flipped vehicle.
The other car with a crumpled bonnet and airbags deployed came to rest in the middle of two closed lanes.
The collision could be heard inside the bowling club.
The speed limit in that section of Pittwater Road is 70km/h.
Local police from the Northern Beaches Police Area Command are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The bus lane on Vineyard Street remains closed, but northbound lanes have reopened on Pittwater Road.
Traffic authorities are urging drivers to take care and allow extra travel time due to heavy congestion in the area.
Anyone who witnessed the crash, or has dashcam footage, is asked to contact local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
