A man is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot by police in a north-western suburb of Newcastle on Saturday afternoon, after he allegedly ran at officers armed with a meat cleaver.
NSW Police say they were called to Hanbury Street in Mayfield about 4.10pm, following a concern for welfare. In a statement, a spokesperson said officers from the Newcastle City Police District attended the scene when a man ran from a unit block towards police, armed with the weapon.

“A taser was deployed which was unsuccessful, and the man was shot by police,” the statement said.
Officers gave medical assistance to the man, believed to be in his 40s, before the arrival of paramedics.
He was taken to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition. There are no other reports of injuries.
NSW Police say a critical incident investigation is under way into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The investigation will also be subject to an independent review.
