Man extradited from New York charged with raping woman at Carlton unit

A Nepalese national charged with raping a woman at an apartment in Sydney's south, hours before fleeing the country, has been extradited from the United States to face court in Australia.

The man, 35, allegedly sexually and indecently assaulted the woman, 21, at Carlton while he was on holidays in June 2017.

Police say the man left Australia hours after he raped the woman.

Police say he left the country shortly after. He was arrested in New York on a federal warrant in January.

The man travelled with police to Los Angeles last week, when he was met by NSW detectives who accompanied him on a flight back to Sydney.

He was charged on Saturday with two counts of sexual intercourse without consent and five acts of indecency.

The man was refused bail and is expected to face Parramatta bail court on Sunday.
