Canberra Now: A bus blocked in protest and good news for homeowners

By Steven Trask

Hi there Canberra.

It looks like the mercury is dipping back into the minuses today, so rug up nice and warm. The overnight low was minus 3 degrees, while the forecast high is 14 degrees.

Here are today's headlines.

House prices in the capital are continuing to rise despite growth stalling throughout much of the country.

A new report shows Canberra's media house price rose 6.2 per cent over the past year, a surge second only to Hobart on 15.9 per cent.

While Canberra's house price has increased, nationally prices have decreased annually by 1 per cent, with larger drops seen in Darwin and Sydney.

Here's the story.

Fed-up Crace residents have taken to the street to protest proposed bus route changes.

About 40 protesters gathered at the route 54 bus stop near the Crace shops on Wednesday morning, temporarily stopping a Belconnen-bound bus.

The protests mark a tide of growing anger against the government's flagged changes, following on from cancellation of dedicated bus services for Canberra schools.

To some, they are the lost causes of the conservation world; a handful of species not only on the brink of extinction but elusive, hard to get to and even harder to track.

But to Dr Dejan Stojanovic, saving these birds is not mission impossible, it's just hard work.

He's part of a small team of ANU scientists taking on some of Australia's most challenging conservation cases at the aptly-named Difficult Bird Research Group, based in Canberra.

Paul Walshe knew ActewAGL was conducting a review of its communications branch.

But he says he was rocked when he heard talk of exactly how many positions could be slashed.

Mr Walshe, who retired on July 13 as ActewAGL's director of brand, communications and corporate affairs after almost 40 years with the company, said the news was devastating.

He spoke with Megan Doherty.

The Canberra Capitals have recruited the daughter of a former Harlem Globetrotter and childhood friend of Ben Simmons to bolster their roster for their mission to end a finals drought.

But news of the arrival of rising gun Hannah Young was offset slightly by the nervous wait for advice from a surgeon about the best way to treat marquee player Kelsey Griffin's hamstring injury.

The Capitals will unveil Virginia Tech forward Young as the club's as newest signing on Thursday after coach Paul Goriss recruited her to the WNBL after six years overseas.

Chris Dutton brings you the details.
