Director Dan: Andrews tees up his next career move
By Tom Cowie
Former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews has taken his first steps into the private sector, registering two companies with him as the sole director.
Company records show Andrews established Glencairn Street Pty Ltd and Wedgetail Partners Pty Ltd this week, with both operating out of an office tower on St Kilda Road.
Andrews stood down after nine years as premier in September and has mostly kept a low profile since then, aside from getting caught up in a public furore over a golf membership at Portsea Golf Club.
When asked about his plans after politics upon stepping down, he said: “I’ve spent a long time in the public sector. I think it’s highly unlikely that I’ll spend too much more time there.”
Andrews, a golf tragic, said he planned to spend time with his family and hit the fairways after his retirement before moving on to a new career.
According to the Australian Securities and Investment Commission filings, Andrews is the sole director, secretary and shareholder of Glencairn Street Pty Ltd.
He is also the sole director and secretary of Wedgetail Partners Pty Ltd but has a shareholder, Zheng Mei, who has joined him to invest in that business.
The documents – which don’t indicate the nature of the businesses – were lodged on Andrews’ behalf by law firm Arnold Bloch Leibler.
A Labor source who spoke to Andrews recently but was not authorised to discuss the details of the conversation publicly said the former premier was unlikely to go into lobbying.
“He’s had a bunch of requests to do different things,” they said.
Andrews could not be reached for comment.
There has been speculation that Andrews would be offered a diplomatic post overseas post-politics, but Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was tight-lipped about that possibility when it first arose.
“I think Dan Andrews is going to make a good golfer in the immediate sense. When I spoke to Dan, that is his intention, to take a bit of a break,” he said in September.
“Look, Daniel Andrews has enormous capacity and he will be successful in whatever endeavour he now embarks on in his future life.”
