Couple wake to gunfire after another drive-by shooting in Melbourne

By Alex Crowe

A Craigieburn home has been sprayed with bullets in the second drive-by shooting in Melbourne in as many days.

A man and a woman, both aged in their 50s, were sleeping inside their Excelsior Heights home when they were woken by gunshots about 12.10am on Thursday.

The house was badly damaged but police say the man and woman were uninjured.

“It is believed a number of shots were fired towards the home causing extensive damage to the front of the residence,” a police spokesperson said.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said detectives would examine whether a previous occupant of the home had been the intended target.

“The two people who were there, I understood, are completely innocent persons, who are very scared as a result of the shooting,” Patton said.

The Craigieburn shooting occurred less than 24 hours after another suburban drive-by shooting in Melbourne’s south-east.

An Endeavour Hills teenager was shot through his bedroom window about 1.20am on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old boy was taken to The Alfred hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He remains in hospital in a stable condition. Police said the teenager might have been an unintended victim of the targeted shooting.

On Saturday, gangland leader Gavin “Capable” Preston, was shot dead in an ambush attack outside a Keilor cafe.

A police blitz is under way across Melbourne’s CBD in response to a recent spate of unrelated violent crimes, including the Bourke Street incident which left one man dead on Friday and the abduction of a teenager in Glen Huntly.

Anyone with information, dashcam footage or who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log onto www.crimestoppers.com.au
