Sam’s back: Kim Cattrall to return to Sex and the City
By Nell Geraets
Kim Cattrall will reprise her role as Samantha Jones in the season two finale of And Just Like That, Max’s revival of HBO’s Sex and the City, in a cameo appearance, according to a report.
According to Variety, Cattrall shot her dialogue on March 22 in New York City, without seeing or speaking with the stars of the series, including Sarah Jessica Parker, or showrunner Michael Patrick King.
The 66-year-old will only appear in one scene, and is likely not to be a continuous presence on the show.
Upon her temporary return, she will speak to Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw over the phone, Variety reports. This follows a text exchange shared with Bradshaw and Jones – who had become estranged – in the first season of And Just Like That and the finale, when the pair decided to meet and reconcile.
Jones was a mainstay of the original Sex and the City series, known for her frequent wild sexual encounters and sarcastic manner. The show, which followed the antics of four female friends navigating work and relationships in New York City, ran for six seasons from 1998 to 2004 and was made into two movies, all of which Cattrall featured in.
However, the Canadian actress publicly announced she would step away from the cast in 2016, citing a poorly constructed third script – which she argued did not do her powerhouse character justice – as the reason for her departure.
“I would have preferred for all of us to have some kind of event to warrant a third film,” Cattrall told Variety in 2022. “That didn’t happen.”
A public rift between Cattrall and Parker ensued, with Parker – the star of the landmark show – admitting she and the rest of the crew did not ask her co-star to return for the reboot.
“I’ve spent a lot of years working really hard to always be decent to everybody on the set, to take care of people, to be responsible to and for people, both my employers and the people that I feel I’m responsible for as a producer of the show,” Parker told The Hollywood Reporter last year. “And there just isn’t anyone else who’s ever talked about me this way.”
The show’s reboot was launched in 2021 with a variety of new characters joining Carrie, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristen Davis) on-screen, including Nicole Ari Parker as Lisa Todd Wexley and Sarita Choudhury as Seema Patel.
During the show’s press circuit last year, Parker and King said they could not imagine Cattrall returning to her role as Jones. However, Variety reports that during production of the second season in New York, chief executive of HBO and Max content Casey Bloys approached Cattrall and eventually convinced her to jump back on board.
Beyond her surprise return appearance, Cattrall is starring in a film with Robert De Niro called About My Father, which will be followed by a role as a makeup mogul in the Netflix drama Glamorous, which is due to hit screens on June 22.
The second season of And Just Like That will premiere on June 22, with Cattrall’s scene airing in August.
