Nick Cave announces death of son Jethro, 31

By Sarah Keoghan

Australian singer Nick Cave has announced the death of his 31-year-old son, Jethro Lazenby.

In a brief statement provided by his management team, Cave wrote: “With much sadness, I can confirm that my son, Jethro, has passed away. We would be grateful for family privacy at this time.”

The cause of Lazenby’s death has not been revealed.

It comes seven years after the death of another of Cave’s four children, Arthur, who fell from a cliff in 2015.

Lazenby had been recently released from jail after he was found guilty of physically assaulting his mother in March.

A court heard that Lazenby kneed his mother, Beau Lazenby, in the face during an argument in her Collingwood home, which caused bleeding and bruising.

He was released on bail on Thursday on the condition he had no contact with his mother for the next two years.

His lawyer told the court he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“Darling Jethro,” she captioned a photo of her stepson on Instagram.

In an interview with the Evening Standard in 2012, Lazenby revealed that he did not meet his father until the age of about seven or eight.

In 2008, Cave told The Guardian about his relationship with his Melbourne-born son.

“To my eternal regret, I didn’t make much contact with Jethro in the early years, but I now have a great relationship with him,” he said. “It was difficult at the time, but it turned out great in the end.”

Lazenby had an extensive modelling career and worked with Balenciaga, Charles Anastase and Lou Dalton.

In 2015, Cave’s teenage son Arthur – Lazenby’s half-brother and Earl Cave’s twin – died after falling from a cliff in Brighton, on England’s south coast. An inquest found the 15-year-old had taken LSD before falling to his death.
