‘Sports luxe tomboy’: Matildas star Kyah Simon’s off-field style
By Georgie Gordon
Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, Matildas star Kyah Simon.
How would you describe your style? Sports luxe tomboy. I love my designer brands and like styling elevated, classic pieces into my everyday wardrobe. I like to be comfortable and look effortless but still put together.
What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe? A pair of ripped One Teaspoon jeans that are a good 10 years old. They started off distressed and have become a lot more so over the years.
And the most recent addition? I treated myself to a black Louis Vuitton “Coussin BB” bag; I like that you can wear it a couple of different ways, with the thick silver chain for events or with a thinner strap for a cross-body casual look. I also picked up a pair of the LV “Signature Square” sunglasses.
What would you wear… on a first date? For the first date with my partner we went for a coffee, so I wore jeans, tee, shacket and sneakers… on a plane? A Fear of God Essentials tracksuit set and comfy Nike sneakers…on the red carpet? I like to wear a suit rather than a dress. To the Marie Claire Women of the Year Awards 2023, I wore a custom black Hugo Boss suit and heels.
What’s your favourite fashion era? I love oversized looks from the ’90s. An oversized tee and blazer are two of my go-tos.
Who are your favourite designers? Louis Vuitton, Dior and Prada.
What’s your fragrance of choice? Surprise, surprise, it’s Louis Vuitton; I’ve worn and loved “Attrape-Rêves” for years.
What are the three essential items in your wardrobe? Baggy Zara jeans, sunglasses – I’ve collected more than a few pairs over the years, and rarely leave the house without them – and a cross-body bag; I go between Louis Vuitton, Dior and Off-White, depending on what goes best with my look.
Any go-to jewellery? A pair of diamond stud earrings that my partner gave me for Christmas, my Apple watch and a Cartier “Love” ring.
Can you remember a favourite outfit from when you were a child? I was always in cargo or boardshorts with a football jersey and a cap. I was into every sport, super active and always outside; rarely did you see me in a dress. My mum would try to dress my sister and me in similar pieces; my sister would always keep hers in nice condition and I’d change mine for something tomboyish.
What was your first fashion moment? I’ve always loved sunglasses, so it was probably getting my first pair of statement Prada sunglasses when I was 15.
And your worst fashion mistake? Wearing a shrug when I was about 14. I look at the photos and think, “Why?”
What’s on your wish list? A Rolex “Datejust 36” white gold watch.
Is there something you would never wear? It’s random, but chequered stockings. I also wouldn’t wear florals.
Is there a current trend you like? I’m loving oversized cargo pants and cargo shorts. I’ve come full circle!
What shoes do you wear most often? Day-to-day I wear Nike Air Force 1s, Jordans or Dunks. For evenings, or when I’m more dressed up, it’s white Dior ID sneakers.
What do you sleep in? Calvin Klein underwear and an oversized tee.
Who’s your favourite fashion icon? I don’t have one person whose style I look to; I just go with what feels comfortable and suits me.
What do you wear on a typical working day? For training, I’ll wear comfortable shorts, a T-shirt and sneakers to get changed into shorts, jersey and boots. My favourite sportswear brands are Nike, which I’ve worn for as long as I can remember, Fear of God Essentials and American label Ryoko Rain, which does a basketball-style short that I like.
What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? Khaki shorts with a Loiter vintage wash tee, Balenciaga slides and my sunnies.
