With her modelling debut, Sunday Rose Kidman Urban has already outdone her Oscar-winning mother Nicole Kidman. The 16-year-old’s appearance on the Paris runway for Miuccia Prada’s youthful label Miu Miu is several steps and a long elevator ride up from Nicole’s Dolly magazine cover in 1983.
Sunday Rose had the honour of opening a show smattered with her mother’s peers, including Nicole’s co-star in Aquaman and The Northman Willem Dafoe and Oscar-winner Hilary Swank.
While Swank let a wry smile slip on the runway, which featured a mash-up of 1970s op art prints revived from a 2005 Miu Miu collection, sporty slips, cropped bomber jackets and pool slides with sock details, Sunday Rose adopted the stony-faced demeanour befitting aspiring supermodels.
The soft launch of Sunday Rose as a model took place in June at the Paris haute couture show for the controversial luxury label Balenciaga. Along with Wicked’s Michelle Yeoh and Isabelle Huppert, Nicole is a Balenciaga ambassador, having walked the runway for the historic brand in 2022 with Kim Kardashian.
At Balenciaga, Sunday Rose sat in the front row wearing a fitted velvet, long-sleeved mock neck mini-dress from designer Demna. The following month, Nicole brought Sunday Rose, this time in a grey vest and matching low-rise pants, to an Omega watch event in Paris for the Olympics.
Having turned 16 in July, fashion’s latest nepo baby wore a simple white dress with strips at the neckline and generous eyelets at the waist, over open-toe black shoes with leg warmers at the Miu Miu show held at the Palais d’Iéna. This season, Mrs Prada took a more demure and mindful approach compared to recent collections featuring ultra-micro mini-shirts and sliced trouser waistbands masquerading as bandeau tops.
The runway set featured giant video screens by Polish artist Goshka Macuga of printing presses, with front-row guests supermodel Barbara Palvin, Daisy Ridley and Addison Rae greeted with copies of a newspaper The Truthless Times.
After the show, Nicole chaperoned her daughter to the Miu Miu after-party at Gigi restaurant. She joins Johnny Depp’s daughter and Chanel favourite Lily-Rose Depp, Stephen Baldwin’s daughter and Alec’s niece Hailey Bieber, Pierce Brosnan’s son Paris and Jude Law’s daughter Iris in the unofficial nepo baby club.
Initially used as a term of derision, highlighting advantages beyond genetics, Bieber reclaimed the label by wearing a “nepo baby” slogan T-shirt last year.
“That was me being, like, ‘I’m very aware of the situation [and] I’m going to wear it loud and proud because you are already labelling me as such, and it’s true,’” Bieber told The Sunday Times. Sunday Rose can order the T-shirt online for $30.
The Miu Miu show took place on the last day of fashion week, after a season of Australian triumphs, including Sydney designer Christopher Esber’s second official schedule show and Zimmermann returning to its swimwear roots with a show inspired by the sun and surf.
