Following on from last year’s “strawberry skin”, perfected by Hailey Bieber, food-inspired beauty trends continue – watch out for pomegranate, tomato and latte make-up. Peach, paired with a natural base for skin, is also lush.

Pomegranate features a creamy blush-base like Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in Grateful ($45), extended over the bridge of the nose with a few strategically drawn faux freckles. Then dab over lids and onto lips before finishing with a swipe of clear Giorgio Armani Prisma Glass Lip Gloss ($65).

For eyes, build the intensity with coral-toned eyeshadow sticks worn either as a liner or smudged all over the lids – we love Chanel Stylo Ombre Et Contour Eyeshadow in 50 Atardecer ($55), matched with a pretty pastel-pink gloss. To kick things up a notch for evenings, add intensity with a retro-inspired eyeshadow pencil in dusty brown or burgundy to create a panda eye.

The food fetish continues with tomato-based blush worn on cheeks and bitten-looking lips with a feathery edge created with a blush brush. Lip stains are a great option for creating this look without adding too much density; try Stila Cosmetics Calligraphy Lip Stain in Malala or Elizabeth ($42 each).

As the year unfolds and autumn beckons, berry, brown and burgundy hues come to the fore. It’s also time for the return of winged eyeliner in red or purple. For lips, go wild with cherry-based stains, glosses and lipsticks that look worn-in. To get this style, apply a lip balm like Violette_Fr Bisou Balm ($48), a touch of lipstick, then kiss a tissue to remove excess shine.

Latte is also on trend, drawing in myriad shades of brown. To get the base iright, try adding bronzing drops to your favourite foundation, then working bronzer over eyes and cheeks and finishing with a nude lip such as M.A.C Cosmetics Macximal Sleek Satin Lipstick ($40).

For all these looks, a fresh complexion is key, with a touch of highlighter working to create skin that looks plump and hydrated. This glowiness works on lips, too: “You can have fun with your lips by going in with eyeshadow,” says make-up artist Pat McGrath. She suggests using an eyeliner brush with her Luminous Legends Mega Eye Shadow Palette ($130) to place sparkle shadows on the cupid’s bow and below the bottom lip. “It’s a small gesture that looks incredibly luxe, like jewels on your lips,” she says. It’s the contrast of the sparkly liner against bare lips that makes this look so wearable.

ASK STEPH

How often should I clean my hairbrush?
Once a week using a gentle shampoo, like Johnson’s Baby Shampoo ($11), in warm water. A toothbrush will help loosen any detritus, including bacteria, dead skin cells, sebum and styling products. Dry the brushes with bristles facing down, or blast with a hairdryer.
