‘Glass skin’ is in. Here’s how to achieve the catwalk-worthy makeup look
The catwalks at the overseas fashion shows are always a hotbed of beauty inspiration. To save you the hard work, I’ve traced every recent trend, from the outlandish to the eminently wearable.
First up, smoky cat’s eyes reigned supreme on the runways in Milan with cool-toned shades, including steely greys and gunmetal greens, at Gucci. The trick to this look is, you guessed
it, prep. Start with M.A.C’s Studio Radiance Luminous Lift Concealer ($55), then apply your favourite eyeliner pencil. We love Gucci Beauty Stylo Contour des Yeux in Anthracite ($55).

Delicious, delicate, flirty blush featured at Phillip Lim, where Fara Homidi gave each model a “subtle lavender halo around the eyes” and candy pink eyes were front and centre at Marques Almeida in London.
Lashes were also high on the beauty-meter, including at Diotima in New York, where make-up artist Kanako Takase crafted full-on sets of false lashes in bright red and white to add a burst of colour and drama. Our version of “runway to real way” is to coat lashes with a base of deep black mascara and finish the tips with a coat of colour - think burgundy (the hue du jour), navy, gold or lilac. This look was paired with hairstylist Joey George’s woven side-swept, low-slung chignons with baby fringes.
Harris Reed’s make-up artist, Sofia Tilbury (niece of Charlotte), had unusual sources of inspiration. “[She] took all my crazy wild dreams of Victorian dolls, the fabulous ’90s, and the ice blue and warm golds we used to create the looks for me that I could’ve never seen outside the realms of my own imagination,” Reed wrote on Instagram. Tilbury highlighted eyes with powder-blue or copper eyeshadow and added Cupid’s-bow-shaped lips. Our take: don’t try this at home.
Fresh, plump and hydrated skin was king everywhere, with some of the best renditions seen at Ulla Johnson in New York and Emilia Wickstead in London. The backstage work that went into creating glistening skin at Johnson’s show saw Romy Soleimani wielding a Sisley Ginkgo Gua Sha ($210) for facial massage before working Sisley Black Skin Rose Infusion Cream ($330) into the models’ skin to get a magnificent dewy base.
Meanwhile, at Prabal Gurung’s New York show, “glass skin” was in. “We wanted the look to exude freshness and pureness,” said make-up artist Sil Bruinsma, who combined Peach & Lily Wild Dew Treatment Essence ($39) and Glass Skin Refining Serum ($39) for a blast of hydration and shine.
Simone Rocha’s spring collection in London was inspired by ballerinas: crystal-flower hair clips, bold red lips, the cutest petal eye masks, and up-dos. But our favourite shows were Chloé in Paris where the hair was effortlessly waved (try the VS Sassoon Unbound Cord and Cordless Curler, $190).
