Macron urges calm in high-stakes New Caledonia visit
Paris | President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday police reinforcements in New Caledonia would remain as long as required, after arriving in the French-ruled Pacific island gripped by deadly unrest triggered by contested electoral reform.
The president said restoring calm to the island was his top priority, after landing in the capital Noumea for talks with local political leaders in a high-profile show of support for the French Pacific archipelago.
