Detroit, Michigan | Tearing up the on-ramp of Motown’s main highway, the new four-tonne electric Hummer takes a mere three seconds to hit 100 kilometres an hour.

The quiet acceleration of GM’s 2.2-metre wide, 1000-horsepower pick-up truck with a battery charged mostly by renewable energy, is a muscular symbol of the rapid growth in electric vehicle sales in America.
