Too many things get called Orwellian these days. Poor George Orwell – a man who advised writers to “never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print” – must be, to use another tired cliche, turning in his grave.
But over on Truth Social, Donald Trump’s Twitter-mimicking social media platform, it is hard to keep the bleak irony and doublespeak of Nineteen Eighty-Four from drifting into one’s mind.
