Donald Trump has pulled off the biggest comeback in American history. All historical comparisons pale against such an extraordinary 2024 presidential election result.

Yet, on one level, it’s a conventional election outcome. The party that failed to manage the economy stupid (amid the inflation outbreak), and which lost control of the borders (amid an influx of illegal migrants), was punished at the polls. That includes the Republican Party winning back the US Senate while maintaining control of the House of Representatives.
