Washington | Australia’s ambassador to the US has quietly been engaging with prominent Democrats who are now urgently being mooted as candidates to replace President Joe Biden following his poor debate performance, which sparked panic in the party.

Mr Biden’s disastrous debate performance against Republican rival Donald Trump on Thursday (Friday AEST) escalated concerns over his fitness for office and sparked widespread calls for him to offer the spot to another candidate as Lyndon Johnson did in 1968.
