Having sold out of the company, if not the family, Kathryn and James Murdoch are using the proceeds to try to reinvigorate America’s struggling democracy.

After rattling through the finer points of ranked-choice voting and the relative merits of open primaries, she pauses and admits that she is drawn to problems that are “a little bit wonkier and less sexy” than other philanthropists.
