This first, unofficial presidential debate had a low bar. Especially given that the American people know both candidates so well. But both Biden and Trump readily descended into the squalor beneath it.

Much of the encounter, as expected, degenerated into allegation and counter allegation, lie and counter lie, and often enough, schoolboy name-calling and chest-beating machismo. The animosity between the two candidates is visceral.
