At 8.45pm on Wednesday night in Washington, American Eagle flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas, was descending calmly into Ronald Reagan National Airport.
The skies were clear, the wind moderate, and among the 60 passengers were several top junior US figure skaters, who had just taken part in a training camp on the ice rinks of America’s Midwest.
