Four more years might complete the dismembering of the Western alliance, make the world even safer for strongmen who think rules are for other people, and radicalise America’s left and right into an unbridgeable culture war. Many wondered how this reality TV show narcissist-president would function in a real crisis. He did not. COVID-19 didn’t fit Mr Trump’s script and he failed even the basic tests of organising and leading in his own country, never mind the rest of the world.
