When the disgraced Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff emerged from a Washington court this week he was dressed like a member of the mob - dark fedora and trench coat over a well-fed frame.
If Abramoff, who is also a restaurateur, had wanted to convey an image of a 1930s prohibition-era thug - a latter day Bugsy Siegel, perhaps - he could hardly have chosen a more appropriate get-up.
