US strike go-ahead limited, but hopes alive in Ukraine
Though restricted for now, America’s hardening posture is nonetheless popular with Ukrainian military planners. The narrowly qualified long-strike approval could portend a broader relaxation.
America’s long-awaited authorisation of Ukrainian strikes inside Russia – widely touted as a game-changer in Ukraine’s flailing fortunes on the eastern front since its announcement at the weekend – is, alas, less potent than it might appear.
This is because President Joe Biden’s green light to use US-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to strike targets inside Russia appears to be limited to the Kursk region, where Ukraine captured about 1000 square kilometres of territory in August.
