London | Prince William and Prince Harry have offered remarkably contrasting public tributes to their grandfather, Prince Philip, underscoring the royal family’s tricky balancing act between appearing human and maintaining the dignity of monarchical office.

Prince William, who is second in line to the throne behind his father, Prince Charles, offered a formal, relatively workmanlike statement emphasising service and duty – although it came with a heart-warming photo of the Duke of Edinburgh with Prince William’s eldest son, Prince George.
