Germany’s Russia inclusion policy in tatters after war
For decades, Germany had hoped it could help build peace and security in Europe through trade and cheap energy deals with Russia.
Berlin | Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has shattered more than 30 years of German efforts to turn Moscow into a stakeholder in a post-Cold War order, and forced a chastened German president to apologise for misunderstanding the Russian leader.
Right up to February 24 when Putin launched his military campaign, Germany and its chief ally France were still pursuing the type of engagement with Moscow that was shaped in the heady days following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
