Geneva | Geneva’s expansive lake looked placid in the autumnal sunshine this week, but the same couldn’t be said of the 3000-plus people gathered on its shoreline at the squat, grey headquarters of the World Trade Organisation.

The body’s annual week-long public forum draws a mixed crowd: trade negotiators, lawyers, economists, business lobbyists, corporate executives, aid workers, consultants, diplomats, journalists and bureaucrats. But one thing seemed to unite a good number of them: a bitter and easily provoked hostility to US President Donald Trump.
