Paris | Australia’s swimmers fell unexpectedly short of a nation’s relentlessly high expectations on Thursday morning (AEST), as two men’s gold medal contenders had to settle for silver, and race favourite Mollie O’Callaghan missed the podium altogether.

In the biggest shock, O’Callaghan and her teammate Shayna Jack finished fourth and fifth in the women’s 100m freestyle, as veteran Swedish swimmer Sarah Sjostrom made a storming return to the event.
