110,000 shoes, 3800 suitcases, 2 tonnes of hair: the pain of Auschwitz

Oswiecim/Auschwitz, Poland | Stanislaw Zalewski, a 94-year-old former inmate of Nazi Germany’s Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, tries not to dwell on his personal experience of human atrocity. But on January 27, he makes an exception.

Having been freed from the camp in 1945, “I put my emotions into a box, and I was able to live a normal life”, he told Polish TV on Monday (Tuesday AEDT). But when the time comes each year to remember Auschwitz, “I take out the box, I open it, I discuss the contents. And once we finish here, I close the box and I put it back”.
