Jakarta/Beijing/Sydney | The United States has taken on China in the South China Sea, moving in on what China regards as a regional dispute as other battles escalate.

On Monday (Tuesday AEST) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo did what much of south-east Asia longed for when he declared China's claims to offshore resources across most of the South China Sea to be "unlawful".
