New strain sparks virus surge in Vietnam as Malaysia locks down

Singapore | Vietnamese authorities say a new strain of the COVID-19 virus has sparked a surge in infections as south-east Asian nations that have been slow to vaccinate struggle to treat the sick and, in Malaysia, bury the dead.

The new strain is a hybrid between the Indian and UK variants, Vietnam’s Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long told an online media conference on Saturday.
