Indonesia's provinces go it alone as crisis deepens

Jakarta/Sydney |Provincial governments across Indonesia have closed airports, ports and land borders and banned large social gatherings in a desperate attempt to stop limited health facilities from being swamped as the nation's health emergency deepens.

The COVID-19 coronavirus has now spread to 32 of Indonesia's 34 provinces. The government of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has announced a massive stimulus plan to protect the vulnerable poor as the economy slows, but continues to resist calls for a lockdown to stop the virus spreading.
