Thoughts of ruined weekends are distant as I manoeuvre the wide, muscular ute to the top of a steep dirt track, where I am suddenly immersed in a thicket. I’m on the outskirts of the Chinese city of Xi’an, test-driving the Shark 6, BYD’s new hybrid electric ute.

The Shenzhen-based EV manufacturer is eager to showcase its latest efforts to woo Australia’s tribal ute-owners. BYD hopes to break through with an electrified competitor to the popular Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux. It is due for sale next month.
