Drone shot down as Taiwan warns of pressure on Xi to take island

Taipei/Washington | A senior Taiwanese official says rising nationalism and a slowing economy on the Chinese mainland could force President Xi Jinping to try to take control of the self-governed island in the next five years.

The warning came just hours before reports that Taiwan’s military shot down for the first time an unidentified civilian drone that entered its airspace near an islet off the Chinese coast.
