Australia can expand its China trade without upsetting the US

The country’s prosperity is built on open trade. The challenge of staying open to both superpowers while not getting crushed between them is becoming trickier.

Tokyo | As Asia gets used to Donald Trump’s realignment of global trade relationships, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s visit to China this week could set the tone for how Australia navigates a new era of economic power – one increasingly shaped by computing muscle, food security and the geopolitical reset.

Artificial intelligence and its underpinning infrastructure are fast becoming the engines of growth in this new global economy. And in a world in which political allegiances increasingly dictate access to commercial markets, Australia finds itself once again well-placed – but only if it can manage the complex tug-of-war between Washington and Beijing.
