ASEAN summit signals Australia’s a trusted partner
Australia has a role to play in promoting “ASEAN centrality” in an open and stable region, and an interest in increasing trade and investment as our neighbours progress to a more prosperous future.
This week’s ASEAN Special Summit in Melbourne isn’t about to capture the public imagination like a Taylor Swift tour.
Still, it’s no small thing, given economic and strategic opportunity amid rising geopolitical pressures in the region, for Australia to host this gathering of the heads of government of nine South-East Asian nations. Especially when this mostly European country located at the foot of Asia is not even a member of the ASEAN group of nations that is of critical importance to Australian prosperity and security.
