Once the future of the internet, the metaverse is largely empty

Two years ago, the world’s biggest brands couldn’t get enough of virtual worlds. Even Mark Zuckerberg was all in. Now, only the most hardcore users are left.

The party has started, but the dance floor is empty. As the synth-pop plays, a character by the name of Mauhetti walks up the stairs of a glass tower owned by CryptoM1nataur to a room where a dozen people with extravagantly curated avatars have come to have a good time.

The drawcard is “chilling with amazing people”. “People here are very cool, creative, smart and funny,” says Mauhetti, who has been coming to Decentraland, a virtual platform better known as a metaverse.
