Labor has a rare chance to streamline cybersecurity regulation

A small cohort of regulator representatives, working with the people from industry who are on the front line, could harmonise expectations.

The continuity of a returned Labor government presents a rare opportunity to drive meaningful, industry-wide transformation in cybersecurity through regulatory harmonisation. This harmonisation could deliver both operational benefits for business and enhanced national cyber resilience. It’s rare for us to be able to hit the two targets of higher quality and lower cost in the wickedly complex domain of cybersecurity.

The Australian government launched its current Cyber Security Strategy in 2023 under minister Clare O’Neil. The strategy aspired to make Australia a world leader in cyber by 2030. This remains a worthy ambition because anything less would be to raise the white flag on the digital age and concede that it’s too hard.
