Big tech backs privacy reform but warns against too much consent
The federal government’s proposal to limit the targeting of digital content and advertising jeopardises the viability of ad-supported services and could have a “massive”, unscoped impact on the way Australian companies do business online, the peak body representing big tech giants has said.
The Digital Industry Group Inc (Digi), which represents the likes of Google, Apple, Meta, Twitter, TikTok and Spotify, also warned the government that its proposed overhaul of the 40-year-old Privacy Act placed too much emphasis on obtaining consent from users and customers before their data was collected, and not enough emphasis on regulating the way companies handle data once they have it.
