Apple and Google told to open up app stores, or else
Australia’s competition watchdog has given Apple and Google a year to open up their app stores to competition or face strong measures that could include legislation forcing them to stop self-preferencing their own apps and payments platforms.
As part of its groundbreaking inquiry into digital platforms, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has found that Apple and Google “restrict competition” through their app stores, which control how apps are installed and paid for on iPhones and Android devices, respectively.
