Westpac’s sackings conceal empty chief officer role

Audit may not be the most glamorous part of a major bank, but it still needs to be staffed.

Another day, another round of job cuts at the big four banks. On Wednesday it was Westpac, announcing it was axing 200 teller roles across its branches. They’re part of the 2000 jobs already expected.

So we can understand why some Westpac staff were raising their eyebrows at the fact the bank is also hiring. Not just for the “concierges” replacing the tellers either, who will be tasked with helping customers use the bank’s app or website and essentially making themselves redundant in the process. Or for hundreds of new lenders.
