If the Victorian senate race is a sign of the times, then chalk Tim Smith down as a vestige of an era less troubled by gender politics.
Only two years ago Smith excavated senior female Liberal minister Mary Wooldridge from her blue ribbon state seat of Kew. It would never happen in 2016.
