Victoria’s gambling laws prevent any one individual from owning more than 35 per cent of the state’s hotel gambling licences. A figure that’s pretty notable, should your name be Bruce Mathieson.

As this column has previously explored, his 25 per cent ownership of ALH Group gives him exposure to 4690 machines in Victoria. But his family as a whole has exposure to over 40 per cent of poker machine licences the state grants to hotels, courtesy of the additional pubs and clubs operated by the families of his daughters Deborah Mathieson-Tomsic and Jodi Grollo.
