To fund itself, casino operator Star Entertainment Group accepted $40 million from a Hong Kong company with alleged links to criminal gangs and triads.

The above is no historic curiosity. It happened during last week’s $1 billion capital raising at the “reformed” Star, where new CEO Robbie Cooke is doing his best to keep the lights on and convince regulators in NSW and Queensland that the company should keep its casino licences, after numerous reviews found it wasn’t “suitable” to do so.
