WA Premier Mark McGowan’s shock resignation this week sent a jolt through this nation’s politics. Not only is “Captain Westralia” the most popular premier in the country, but the factionless, pro-mining, state-border-loving politician was going to be crucial for Anthony Albanese’s chances of getting re-elected. That’s to say nothing of his helping carry the state in this year’s Indigenous referendum.

As Labor bids goodbye to its star full forward, the news may be the first step in revitalising the state’s Liberals, presently battered deep into the wilderness by McGowan. The party holds a frankly embarrassing two out of 59 seats in the West Australian parliament.
