Optus CEO gets congratulated for (so far) surviving Singtel

If Stephen Rue ever needs motivation to keep facing his critics over Optus’ outages, he can turn to LinkedIn to remember he just needs to “keep the line” and “hang tough”.

Optus CEO Stephen Rue hasn’t had much luck when it comes to technology since he started in the role last November. There was the system outage that meant Triple Zero calls stopped working in September, resulting in several deaths. Then in the first press conference explaining the disaster, he seemed unable to get his computer off mute.

His predecessor, Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, wasn’t any better. Her reign included the 2022 cyberattack that resulted in millions of customers’ data leaked onto the dark web, and the 2023 nationwide outage that shut down all their phones.
