Corporates and politicians appeared wary about attending one of the best parties on the business calendar but a handful of powerbrokers still turned out.
It took only minutes after 20-to-1 Manzoice ran down favourite Sharp n’ Smart to win the Victoria Derby for punters to begin streaming out of Flemington.
There were still two races to go, but the main stands emptied and by 5pm only the diehards were left hoovering up wine and beer in the birdcage.
