In 2003, then US president George W. Bush stood on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to speak about combat operations in Iraq. Everyone’s eyes went to the banner above him blaring: “Mission Accomplished.”

It was an image that Bush never lived down, given the US military suffered 4418 deaths and 31,994 wounded in action by 2010 as part of “Operation Iraqi Freedom”, whichever marketing genius thought of that name.
