Readers of The Sydney Morning Herald must’ve been staggered by the news on Saturday afternoon that fashion icon Carla Zampatti was dead, a week after falling at the opera. After all, they’d been told by that morning’s edition that Zampatti was “on the mend”.

So went the headline of the Private Sydney column. Author Andrew Hornery even quoted “family sources” to support this claim.
