Westfield shareholders have voted overwhelmingly in favour of selling the global shopping empire to European giant Unibail-Rodamco in Australia's biggest takeover, worth more than $33 billion.

In the first of a collection of demerger and annual general meetings, chairman Sir Frank Lowy joined by his sons Steven, Peter and David, declared a 97.5 per cent vote in favour of the deal.
